Rosarno January 27th ,2018 – A dead woman, another seriously wounded. This is the result of the devastating bonfire that flared up last night in the tent city / shanty town of San Ferdinando in the Piana di Gioia Tauro, the largest ghetto in Italy hosting two thousand migrants hired to harvest citrus fruits . Over half of the settlement was destroyed along with the few belongings of many people. Only a few weeks ago, Medici per i diritti umani – Medu  ( Physicians for Human Rights) who had worked for years in the Piana with a mobile clinic, denounced the appalling conditions of life and work faced by thousands of foreign workers. “Nothing has changed with respect to the inhumane material conditions that led to the so-called Rosarno revolt eight years ago”, could we  read in the MEDU press release. Now something has changed: somebody died. Besides  the dynamics of the fire that will be investigated, one element is certain: the responsibilities of the institutions of this country well aware of the dramatic conditions of living of the workers; little or nothing has been  done to prevent what happened last night.

Medici per i diritti umani – Medu  ( Physicians for Human Rights)  established the Terragiusta project in 2014. Campaign against the exploitation of migrant workers in agriculture. The partners of the two-year period 2016-18 are: Arci “Iqbal Masih” of Venosa, Flai-Cgil of Gioia Tauro, City of Rosarno, Terra! Onlus, Zalab, Amisnet / Echis, OIS- Osservatorio Internazionale per la Salute Onlus (International Observatory for Health Onlus)
