Medici per i Diritti Umani – MEDU (Doctors for Human Rights Italy) presents the 2018 report on the living and working condition of the migrant workers in the Plain of Gioia Tauro (Calabria, South of Italy) titled “The Wretched of the Earth.” From December 2017 to April 2018, MEDU mobile clinic operated for its fifth consecutive year in the Plain of Gioia Tauro, providing socio-medical assistance to the migrant laborers who have returned to the area for the citrus harvesting season. Approximately 3,500 people distributed in the various informal settlements peppered throughout the Plain have once again been the supply of flexible and low cost labor to the local orange, clementine, and kiwi producers. Exploitative working conditions, illegal practices and marginalizing living conditions remain the characterizing features of this reality in which very little has changed compared to previous years. Eight years after the “Rosarno uprising”, the large ghettos of migrant workers in the Plain of Gioia Tauro continue to represent a scandal in this country that has furthermore been removed from the public debate and from the political institutions, seeming incapable of any concrete and widespread initiative. Today, more than ever, the Plain of Gioia Tauro is a place where the overlap of the globalized economy, the contradictions in the management of the migratory phenomenon in our country and the unresolved issues of the south continues to produce its most ill-fated fruits.
