Terragiusta. Against the exploitation of agricultural migrant workers

This project aims to provide healthcare and socio-legal support to seasonal migrant workers, often victims of labour exploitation and living in precarious conditions in some of the most fragile areas of Southern Italy.

MEDU works with a mobile clinic – a van with medicines and basic
equipment to give first healthcare assistance and socio-legal
orientation for migrant working in agriculture.

The specific goals are the following:

    • to raise awareness about the social, healthcare and labor rights
      of migrants working in agriculture, and to apply such rights;
    • to support sustainable development by promoting social, housing
      and labor inclusion within the shantytowns;
    • to inform the civil society and the institutions about the living
      and working conditions of migrants working in agriculture, and to
      encourage the implementation of protection measures for workers.

From 2016 to 2018, MEDU’s team provided assistance to 1,388 migrants
mostly coming from western sub-Saharan Africa. The team achieved 1,926
medical consultations, implementing both first medical check-ups and, in
some cases, follow up examinations.
The equipe includes:

      • a coordinator,
      • a medical practitioner
      • a cultural mediator

In 2019 the project will be based on a more integrated intervention
approach. It will still provide health and legal support, but also an
experimental initiative for inclusivity for which the beneficiaries will
join work internships and will be supported joining the real estate
market through our team’s mediation. This strategy aims to overcome, not
only to mitigate, the current state of decay and exploitation of
migrants.
The expected results are the amelioration of the access to healthcare
and to social assistance through the mobile clinic’s work; the
orientation about national and local services available for the workers,
and the improvement of such institutions; increased chances to apply
fundamental migrants’ rights and at the same time to reduce their
vulnerability, through legal support to migrants in regular or irregular
status; a higher degree of migrants’ social and economic integration;
and, finally, the achievement of territorial development through the
access to programs for social, housing and working inclusion.
